Required Run Rate

Required run rate shows how many runs per over a chasing side still needs.

Required run rate is the quickest way to read pressure in a chase.

Formula

Required Run Rate = Runs Needed / Overs Remaining

Example: 60 runs needed from 5 overs gives a required run rate of 12.00.

Quick Example

A chasing side needs 42 runs from 4 overs.

42 / 4 = 10.5

The required run rate is 10.50.

Quick Summary

  • Required run rate shows chase pressure immediately.
  • Dot balls can push it up very quickly.
  • It is best read against the current run rate.

How To Read This Stat

Required run rate is easiest to understand through close chases, finishing roles, and white-ball matches decided late in the innings.

What is required run rate?

Required run rate is found by dividing the remaining runs by the remaining overs in a chase. Every dot ball or boundary can shift it quickly.

How it shapes strategy

If the current run rate falls below the required rate, the batting side usually needs to take more risk. That is why this number is constantly tracked in chases.

Example calculation

If 54 runs are needed from 36 balls, the required run rate is 9 per over. If the next over produces only 4, the pressure rises sharply.
